Disclaimer: The following is a list of the various steps that your car goes through when it is delivered to a scrap yard.
So, if you’re unfamiliar with the process, pay close attention; it might help you sell your car for a fair price.
Many towing businesses do not provide this information with their customers because they want to maximise their profit from your vehicle. If you’re reading this, chances are you have a trash automobile on your property that has been taking up space for years.
You’ve finally decided to take it to a scrapyard, but you’re not sure how to scrap it or if you’re receiving a fair price for it. While many automobiles are eventually destroyed, they do not immediately go through a car crusher when you leave or sell to a junkyard.
Majority of the people will sell their car to a junkyard because they have no use for it. In and around the city, there are a number of junk car buyers who will pay cash for such cars. The vast majority of them will pick up your vehicle for free and move it away from your property.
What’s the catch though?
Well read further to understand the pricing along with the process the car goes through once bought by a towing company.
After being picked up by the towing company, the vehicle is taken to a local junkyard or one that the tower is familiar with. All of these yards have been registered for EASR in Ontario. The Ministry of Environment of Ontario offers this licence to auto scrap yards.
Step #1: Arrival and Transferring of your Vehicle
Assume your car has been towed to a junkyard. The junkyard owner performs a thorough inspection first. The inspection is straightforward; they rapidly determine what they can salvage from the vehicle if it is stripped down to parts.
Like I said before, pay close attention, this comes back to negotiating a good price with the towing company.
If the parts are in good condition, they will be fixed and sold; nevertheless, if profits cannot be achieved, the car will be dismantled and recycled by the scrapyard.
You have a good understanding of selling your car by determining its value by these parts.
But keep in mind that these towing businesses will pick up your car for free (which is a cost they are okay to take).
Step 2: Stripping The Car
Cars contain a variety of dangerous elements that must be removed and disposed of properly. Being environmentally friendly, these parts can also be used to resale.
Removing The Battery
This is usually the first part to be detached and broken into its various components (lead, plastic, etc.) to be recycled most effectively or resold as a Quality Used Battery for customers. Find out why used batteries are a cost effective purchase.
Removing The Tires
Next, the tires will be removed and recycled, although only a certain amount can be stored on-site at any one time. This is because large numbers of tires can burn for days at very high temperatures if they catch fire.
Fluids
All oils, lubricants, fuel, coolants, refrigerants, antifreeze fluids, and wash fluids will be removed and stored in sealed tanks for recycling.
Hazardous metals
Lead and mercury are toxic materials that are hazardous to the environment. They are removed and disposed of safely.
Glass and Plastic
Your car is 50 percent plastic and can be reused to make other items. Window glass can be removed and recycled too.
Everything else
Other items that are removed include airbags, wheels and lead balance weights, seat belts and pretensioner, catalytic converter, etc.
Step #3: Crushing and Shredding
Once the vehicle has been stripped, it is flattened by a giant press to make it easier to handle, and from there, it goes into the shredder. If the chunk were to be pressed into a cube, it would be roughly the size of a large microwave oven or a small dishwasher. And from there, the metal will be used to manufacture new vehicles and other goods.
If your car has given you nothing but grief, or if it’s been in an accident and its parts are too damaged to be repaired, scrapping your car can be a good option. Now that you know what happens to cars at the scrapyard and feel better about it, consider scrapping your old car with us.
